Can’t make it across the globe for that sizzling Euro summer this year? Make all your vacation fantasies come true with this sprawling winter-inspired European night market instead.
This month, Melbourne’s fabulous Madame Brussels Lane transforms into a sultry wonderland, with all the Bavarian beer hall vibes you crave and love in the form of music, food and frivolous entertainment galore. Each Friday from July 7-28, you’re invited to partake in the festivities and gastronomic feasts.
Last year broke a record with more than 24,000 people flocking to the lane across four Friday nights to celebrate, so this year organisers have prepared by expanding the space. In 2023, the event will extend into Little Lonsdale Street for the very first time to create an even bigger, bolder and more beautiful market atmosphere.
The enchanting program promises live performances each night from European bands, cheeky stilt performers and a hilarious group of roving German entertainers, including German Papa Gluck and Heidi the Hula Hoop Pretzel, all decked out in adorable lederhosen and dirndl outfits. Enchanting ballerinas in jewel-studded costumes will dance the night away for your viewing pleasure, and you can also keep your eyes peeled for the comical Great Christmas Gizmo or Mr Frost.
But it wouldn’t be a European night market without plenty of tasty morsels on offer, so let’s talk food and drink. Savoury highlights include bratwurst sausages from Bavarian Bangers, Italian spaghetti tossed in a wheel of grana padano cheese and fresh cannoli from That’s Amore, Spanish paella from Elene’s Paella, ooey-gooey deep-fried camembert cheese straight from the French Alps by Frencheese, traditional Polish dumplings by the famous Pierogi Pierogi, fresh panzerotto from Puglia by Il Panzerotto, crisp potato twists by Twistto, pretzels and artisanal pastries from Mellow Beans, loaded hot dogs and fries from Pokéd, and lobster and king prawn rolls from Claw and Tail.
Over in the sweets realm, you'll be tempted with French crepes from Les Crepes de Marion, freshly baked and torched crème brûlée from Crème Bru Lee or Danish doughnuts from dessert bar Jamm’d. Needless to say, be sure to have a light lunch!
Thirsty? You’ll be covered for drinks with beer, mulled wine, cider and European-themed cocktails from this year’s exclusive partner, award-winning Little Lon Distilling Co. Go all out on G&Ts or try something different like the super popular Warm Dutchy, a mulled Dutch-style gin, or the Spiked Orange Hottie, a boozy blend of warm gin and orange-infused hot chocolate.
The European Night Markets run over several Fridays in July from 5pm until 10pm, and entry is free. If there's only one winter event you brave the cold for this year, let it be this. Prost!
